To all the people making comments and comparisons with Tidal or other services offering tracks at 24bit/192kHz and blaming Spotify for not being good enough: please stop, keep calm, open an electronics book and get an education about how digital audio actually works and don't be fooled by the marketing scam of the "signal stairsteps", "infinite sampling rate is better" and pseudo-science promoted by the so-called "audiophiles". TL;DR. For the sole reason of listening to music, THERE'S NO NEED TO GO BEYOND 16 bits (or 24 if you want to avoid the added dither, that doesn't make any difference anyway since the bit depth only affects the dynamic range of the signal and the 90+dBs of the CD are more than enough FOREVER) AND 48kHz. Period. With regard to the sample rate especially, the Nyquist/Shannon theorem states that you only need a sampling frequency that is 2 times the maximum frequency that you want to reproduce to get all the frequencies below and up to that point perfectly represented. So 44.1kHz (the CD sampling rate) or 48kHz (the broadcast standard sampling rate) are able to represent PERFECTLY frequencies up to 22.05 and 24kHz respectively. And the ideal limit of human hearing is 20kHz. And I underline IDEAL because even a very young elite of people with perfect hearing can get at best 16-18kHz. And when you are 30 you're lucky to get even 14kHz with no significant attenuation... It's no coincidence that lossy codecs, that are designed to cut out useless data that won't make a difference, usually throw away everything beyond 15-16kHz and that Sony and Philips engineers, when designed the CD, stated that reproducing anything between 20Hz and 20kHz was enough to cover every human need. We are not bats, so recording and processing digital audio at 96+kHz is just a waste of space, bandwidth and processing power. For something that no human will be able to hear, no speaker can correctly reproduce and no microphone can correctly capture anyway. HiRes audio is a commercial scam that exploits people ignorance, making you think that is like HiRes (4K HDR and beyond) video so you can sign up to more expensive subscriptions or re-buy your existing music library on HiRes physical media. Is not: digital video and digital audio works in different ways. HiRes audio makes the same sense as recording ultraviolet and infrared spectrums on video. Since our eyes cannot see them, recording, storing and reproducing them makes absolutely no difference. Therefore Spotify, that is going to offer CD lossless quality, so 16/44.1-48, is doing the right thing for its customers. It gives you perfect quality, is space efficient on their data centers and saves your bandwidth when you stream it consuming less data of your mobile plan. Of course, you will need decent equipment to tell the difference between lossless and regular lossy audio (and at 320kbps with modern lossy codecs like AAC or Opus is damn hard even on high level systems), but this is another story. The CD was marketed as "perfect sound forever" for a reason back in 1982. And this is true still today. Kudos to Spotify for this move AND for having common sense in a world where its competitors seems to have not.
