The 2022 Subaru BRZ is a New Sports Car Designed to Stand Out in an SUV World

The #SubaruBRZ was always an outlier in the #Subaru lineup. As the company's only RWD car, its bespoke chassis, high-revving engine, and near perfect 50/50 weight distribution made it a huge hit for enthusiasts looking for an entry-level sports car with a big tuning potential. For 2022, the long-awaited second generation #BRZ is here, it gets a new 2.4L NA F-4 with up to 228 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. Subaru has also given the BRZ a new design inside and out and when it goes on sale next Fall, pricing shouldn't stray too far from the current models under $30k base price.

A brand new sports car doesn’t come around very often. Especially an affordable one like the BRZ, expect to see Toyota unveil the new 86 very soon. We’re looking forward to seeing how that new 2.4L feels, do you believe Subaru should have gone the turbo route with a higher price tag? Or are you happy they elected to leave it naturally aspirated?

  2. digitaldoc100

    digitaldoc10017 hours ago

@Dave Volz Yes, big problem with the car, and the fix is making it worse. I think that may be a reason they went with the 2.4 engine, but they should have left the turbo as an option.

@digitaldoc100 what they are worried about is blown engines.

@Mateusz Kucharski look bro i have no idea why you even talking to me rn whether on track or street it's still a underpowered shit box. if they give it 310 horsepower that'll make it worth 30 thousand but as it is now for 30 thousand it's a piece of shit🤷🏾‍♂️

As an owner of a 2013 Scion FR-S I have to say with this 2022 BRZ - this platform has truly grown up and matured. It looks like a more sophisticated sports car with the same roots as the first gen. I’m curious how my tuned FR-S with full bolt-ons and E85 tune would stack up against this. This platform is moving in the right direction and I would consider getting a 2nd gen.

  18. Tj Tucker

Yeah then it’ll creep on STI and Supra sales. It’s the only reason why they haven’t done it. When they say it’s for cost reasons they’re BSing.

It's still bullcrap that there is no turbo. The naturally aspirated version could be a Toyota, but this thing deserves at least 300 hp. For all the talk about taking sales away from the WRX and STI, I am not sure. Some buyers need four doors and four wheel drive and want to go fast. I think the FA20 turbo BRZ with the same power but less torque (and less weight obviously) than the old WRX would be ideal. Both the WRX and STI likely to have the FA24 turbo in their next generations, so there would not be any overlap. Also, I will put it out there that the reason cars are becoming so expensive and out of the reach of the enthusiasts that would buy them is because the automakers put so many technology and luxury options in the car that buyers in the segment don't care about. I liked how an old WRX from 2003 or 2004 was sort of crappy on the inside but was still screwed together tight and had good supportive seats. Similarly, as a former 370Z owner, the only tech feature I wish I had was a rear camera because visibility was so bad in the back. The rest of the car was basic but nice to sit in and very reliable. What else do buyers of sporty cars care about besides performance and reliability?

“I wish it had a flat bottom steering wheel” 🤦‍♂️ no, just no. This is a back to basics sports car. The last thing they should be adding is pointless RaCEcAr aesthetics (and yes it is aesthetics, as the cockpit is designed for a normal wheel, the only cars that seriously benefit from flat bottom steering wheels are truly cramped cockpits like the Alfa 4C). Frankly, I think it looks damn near perfect. Prettiest car out there until you get to $60k+.

  34. winglessang31

    winglessang312 days ago

I mean I like it. I’m not a big fan of the front end. I really think they should have turbocharged it. It’s not cool to buy something that they supposedly addressed the power in like the car and be getting passed by the current generation with a light turbo setup slapped on. If they were going to go bigger displacement they should have went all the way with a turbo.

  35. D.B.

    D.B.3 days ago

People must stop moaning about turbos and start celebrating the fact we still have an affordable, RwD, great handling chassis that you can drive hard and rev to its 7/8k redline with a great gearbox!

  36. Thujan Krishnakumar

    Thujan Krishnakumar3 days ago

I want this. I wish they had a turbo option, as someone who doesn't mind paying 7-10k more. Then again I'm sure there will be aftermarket options.

  37. Tj Tucker

    Tj TuckerDay ago

It’s not for cost reasons, it’s because they know a small sports car with turbos would eat the sales of the Supra and STI

  38. lapamful

    lapamful3 days ago

It would be interesting to see if this still has that torque dip in the middle of the rev range. Although the power is boosted somewhat, the torque is still way down compared to HP (don't know if that indicates anything). Still, it's a much better looking car compared to other cars that we waited so long for, such as the C8 and Supra. Look forward to the full review Sofyan.

Hope there still a Toyota version. And hopefully it’s a bit more handsome. I hate the new tail on the car. The Honda Civic tail lights are awful. And they made the hips of the car too narrow. The trunk slopes off into nothing, what looks like 10” short of the tail lights on each side. That makes the car look too narrow at the top of he trunk in the back. That’s evidenced by the fact that they had to give the tail lights a horizontal surface on top of the to kind of fill out the body a bit. Tail lights should only really have a vertical surface as a design element. As for the front, I’m mixed. It’s not bad on its own, but as generational progress from the previous car I think it is a step backward. I think the narrower/more angular headlights of the current model are better looking. But I’m glad to see the black bumper reenforcement/fake grille space gone. That does however make the hood look like the slope at the leading edge is a bit wonky and too steep however. I’ll wait to see one in person. But right now I think the out going model is a far better looking car.
